Question

Garreau's potometer is designed to demonstrate unequal transpiration from the two surfaces of a dorsi-ventral leaf. Before keeping the leaf in between the cups, anhydrous calcium chloride contained in two small vials were weighed and placed in both cups. The ends of the cups were closed with corks through which two mercury manometers were connected. After a few hours, the vials were weighed again.

A. What is the purpose of keeping CaCl2 vials inside the cup?
B. Will you expect any difference in the weight of the vials after weighing then for the second time? If so, GIVE REASON.
C. What was the purpose of using the manometer?
D. What do to you mean by transpiration?

Solution

1) The CaCl2 vials are kept i nside the cup to absorb water
2)After a few hours, the weight of CaCl2 vials will increase becouse they will absorb the water which is transpired by the leaf of plant
3)Manometers are used to indicate the un equal transpiration from two surfaces of dorsiveritral leaf by showing difference in rise of mercury levels
4)Transpiration is the loss of water in the form of water vapour from areal part of living plants
