Question

Gaseous reaction in a closed vessel is reversible or irreversible. Also give example.

Solution

It will be reversible

I will explain it with an example

If a gaseous mixture of hydrogen and iodine vapors is allowed to react at around 444o C or 717 kelvin in a closed vessel for about 2 - 3 hours, the gaseous HI is produced. The reaction is as follows:

H2(g) + I2(g) →→ 2HI(g)

Along with the production of gaseous HI, some amount of the unreacted part of gaseous H2 and I2 would be left.

While on other hand if this gaseous HI (hydrogen iodide) is kept in a closed vessel at 717 K for a duration of 2 - 3 hours, then it decomposes to give gaseous H2 and gaseous I2.

2HI(g) →→ H2(g) + I2(g)

Even in this chemical change some amount of gaseous HI (hydrogen iodide) will remain unreacted.

This indicates that the products of a few reactions could be converted back into the reactants and these kind of reactions are suitably termed asreversible reactions.
