Question

Gases diffuse very fast. Why ?

Open in App
Solution

  • Diffusion is the process of intermixing particles of different types of matter (solids, liquids, and gases).
  • Diffusion causes the particles to move from a region of high concentration to a lower concentration.
  • Gases show the maximum rate of diffusion while solids show the least rate of diffusion.
  • Due to the large space among the particles of gases and weak intermolecular attraction, gases show diffusion at a fast rate.
  • On increasing the temperature or supplying heat, the particles of gases gain energy and start moving with more velocity.
  • Hence, increasing temperature increases the rate of diffusion.
