Question

Gases have neither definite shape nor definite volume. Explain.

Open in App
Solution

The statement can be explained by the following reasons:

  1. Gases have negligible intermolecular forces of attraction.
  2. They have maximum intermolecular space between molecules of gases.
  3. Due to negligible forces of attraction they do not have a definite shape.
  4. They do not have a definite volume because of their large intermolecular space between molecules.

Hence, gases take the shape and volume of the container they are filled in and therefore do not have a definite shape and definite volume.
