Question

Gases have neither definite volume nor definite shape. Why?

Open in App
Solution

Gases do not have a definite shape or volume because of the following reasons:

  • Gases try to fill to the whole of the closed container and no definite volume it depends on the container.
  • The molecules in gases are very loosely packed, they have large intermolecular spaces and hence they move freely without any restriction.
  • The kinetic energies between the molecules is high enough to break away from any boundaries and they move randomly.
  • Gases have very less force of attraction, as a result gases acquire any shape or any volume.
