Aldehyde group is -CHO group in which one valency of Carbon is free to combine with different atoms and groups.

If the valency of Carbon is satisfied with Hydrogen, the member will be HCHO.

If it is satisfied with methyl group, the member will be CH3CHO.

If it is satisfied with ethyl group, the member will be C2H5CHO.

And so on.

The general formula of alkyl group is CnH2n+1 and hence general formula for aldehyde will beCnH2n+1CHO provided n = 0, 1, 2, 3, etc.
