An ideal fuel releases large amount of heat on burning. Therefore, it should have large calorific value. A substance that has a higher calorific value will produce more heat when the same mass or amount is burned compared to a substance which has lower calorific value. For example, between CNG and hydrogen, hydrogen is approaching more towards ideal fuel as calorific value of hydrogen (150000 KJ/Kg) is larger than the calorific value of CNG (150000 KJ/Kg).
