Genes code for specific proteins and are transferred from one generation to the next when chromosomes from the parent cell are segregated into daughter cell. So, genes are the physical basis of heredity.
Genes are discrete units of a chemical substance the DNA. The DNA is coiled multiple times to form structures called the chromosomes. So that it can be accommodated in the nucleus of the cell.
