Genetic biodiversity in agricultural crops is majorly threatened by:
introduction of high yielding varieties
Loss of genetic diversity includes the loss of a single gene or combination of genes.
The major factors responsible for loss of genetic diversity include replacement of the traditional varieties, indigenous species and landraces with genetically uniform, high-yielding, modern cultivars. This is resulting in loss of about three-quarters of the genetic diversity of agricultural crops. Intensive recent development activities, habitat destruction by modern agriculture also contribute to great extent in the loss of the native crops.
