The genetic code includes 64 possible permutation and combinations, of three-letter nucleotide sequences that can be made from the four nucleotides in case of mRNA - A, U, G and C. Of the 64 codons, 61 represent amino acids and the remaining three are stop codons. Some amino acids are found to have more than one codon. So, the genetic code has more number of codons than the number of amino acids they code for.
