Question

Give 3 examples of acid reaction with metal

Open in App
Solution

Acids react with metals to form salt and hydrogen gas.

General word equation for the reaction:

Metal + AcidSalt + Hydrogen

It is a displacement reaction in which an element displaces another element in a compound. The hydrogen in acids is displaced by the metals to produce hydrogen gas.

Examples of acids are sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and hydrochloric acid (HCl). The most active metals are Magnesium (Mg), Iron (Fe), and Lead (Pb).
Active metals can displace hydrogen ions from acids due to their high reactivity.
Some examples of acid metal chemical reactions:

  • Magnesium + Hydrochloric acid ⟶ Magnesium chloride + Hydrogen gas [Mg(s)+2HCl(aq)⟶MgCl2(aq)+H2(g)]
  • Magnesium + Sulphuric acid ⟶ Magnesium sulphate + Hydrogen [Mg(s)+H2SO4(aq)⟶MgSO4(aq)+H2(g)]
  • Iron + Sulfuric acid ⟶ Iron sulfate + Hydrogen [Fe(s)+H2SO4(aq)⟶FeSO4(aq)+H2(g)]
