Question

Give a balanced equation for lab preparation of Ethylene. How is the gas collected?

Open in App
Solution

Lab Preparation of Ethylene:

In the laboratory, it is prepared by dehydration of Ethyl alcohol (CH3CH2OH).It is heated with excess sulphuric acid at a temperature around 160-170°C in a round bottom flask with thistle funnel and delivery tube.

The reactions involved is:

C2H5OH(l)(Ethylalcohol)conc.H2SO4C2H4(g)(Ethylene)+H2O(l)(water)

Gas Collection:

  1. The gas coming out of the delivery tube is passed through a wash bottle containing Potassium hydroxide(KOH) or Sodium hydroxide(NaOH) solution.
  2. Pure Ethylene is hence collected by downward displacement of water.
