$C H_{3} - C H_{2} O H + H_{2} S O_{4} \to C H_{3} - C H_{2} H S O_{4} + H_{2} O$

$C H_{3} - C H_{2} H S O_{4} e x c e s s H_{2} S O_{4} - ------- \to 160^{o} C C H_{2} = C H_{2} + H_{2} S O_{4}$

The gas is collected by downward displacement of water.
