Present day concept of evolution is called as Neo-Darwinism. It is also called as the modern evolutionary synthesis. It consists of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection, Gregor Mendel's theory of genetics as the basis for biological inheritance and mathematical population genetics. It is a gene-centered theory of evolution. It gives connection between the units of evolution, genes and the mechanism of evolution, natural selection.
