Question

Give a mathematical expression for the gravitational force.

Open in App
Solution

  1. According to the universal law of gravitation, every object in the universe attracts other objects with a force (F), whose magnitude is directly proportional to the product of their masses (say m1 and m2) and inversely proportional to the square of the distance (R) between them.
  2. Therefore, we can write F=Gm1m2(R)2, where G is called the universal gravitational constant.
  3. The value of G is 6.67 x 10-11 Nm2 kg-2.
