Give a note on the pulse polio programme.

Polio or poliomyelitis: It is an infectious disease caused by the Poliovirus which is transmitted to a healthy person through the intake of contaminated food and water.

Pulse polio programme:

1. The program in India was initiated in December 1995 to eradicate poliovirus from our country.
2. According to this program, the Polio vaccine is given to all infants up to 5 years of age in three doses through the mouth.
3. It aims to protect against polio disease which causes paralysis.
