Question

Give a reason for the following.
Ionisation potential increases across a period, from left to right.

Open in App
Solution

Across a period from left to right, there is an increase in nuclear charge by 1 which is much higher than the shielding of each electron being added to the same shell (n). Therefore, a net increase in the force of attraction between electron and nucleus results in an increase in ionization potential.
