Question

Give a simple experiment to show that matter occupies space.

Open in App
Solution

Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space. Air, solids and liquids are the different types of matter.

Air has a definite mass and it does occupy space around us. Mass of air is negligible. To prove that it occupies space, we can prove it by the experiment of filling a balloon with air. Air takes up the space inside the balloon and as more air is filled, it expands the balloon creating more space.

Liquids like water has mass and it takes up space around us. For example, water in a beaker takes up space inside the beaker.

Another experiment is-

Take a bucket filled with water till its brink. Put a rock in it. Some water will be spilled out.

You just saw matter displacing matter to occupy space.

Solid objects occupy space and have mass. It does not need any experiment to prove as it is just simple common sense.
