Give an account of the process adopted by Mendeleev for the classification of elements. How did he arrive at “Periodic Law”?

Mendeleev studied the compounds of the elements with oxygen and hydrogen (oxides and hydrides) to examine the chemical properties of the then known elements.
He arranged the elements with similar properties in a group and observed that elements got arranged in the order of increasing atomic masses.
