  • Over the country, the northeast trade winds prevail during the winter season.
  • In North India, the coldest months are January and December.
  • In Northern India, from mid of November, the cold weather season will begin and it remains till February.
  • Snowfall is experienced in the higher slopes of the Himalayas.
  • As we move from Southern Indian to North India, the temperature keeps reducing.
  • In the Northern plains, during the cold season, the temperature ranges between 10° – 15° Celsius and 24° – 25° Celsius is the average temperature range in Chennai, located on the East coast.
  • Snowfall is experienced in higher slopes of the Himalayas and in the North, Frost is common.
  • It is a dry season in most parts of the country, as the winds blow from land to sea.
  • Due to the geographical location, the eastern coast of Tamil Nadu will receive rain as the winds blow from sea to land.
  • Variable and feeble winds, low temperatures, clear sky marks the weather.
  • Over Northern plains, the inflow of cyclonic disturbances from the West and North west is a characteristic feature of the cold weather.
  • Along with the westerly flow, the low-pressure systems also start moving into India, but they originate over West Asia and the Mediterranean Sea.
  • For the cultivation of rabi crops, these rains are of immense importance. These rains are locally known as ‘mahawat’.
  • There is no cold season which is well defined in the Peninsular region. The sea has a moderating influence during winters, one cannot find much change in the temperature pattern.
