Question

Give an example of each mixture having the following characteristics. Suggest a suitable method to separate the components of these mixtures:

Two volatile components with the appreciable difference in boiling points.

Solution

Distillation:-

  1. A process where selective boiling and subsequent condensation of a component that is present in a liquid mixture is done is called distillation
  2. This is a type of separation technique that is used to obtain the pure components from a mixture or can be used to increase the concentration of any particular component that is present in that mixture.
  3. For example, kerosene (volatile) can be separated from petrol (volatile) with the help of this distillation process.
  4. In this process, the two liquids in the distillation flask are started to boil.
  5. Since petrol has a lower boiling point, vaporises at first and thus gets condensed and isolated from the mixture and leaves behind kerosene in the flask.
  6. Therefore, without getting decomposed, both the liquids are separated during this process.

Therefore, two volatile components kerosene and petrol with appreciable differences in boiling points can be separated with the distillation method.
