Molecular solid: The constituent particles of molecular solids are molecules of the same compound. These are classified into polar molecular solids, non polar molecular solids and hydrogen bonded molecular solids. The examples of molecular solids include HCl, SO2, Cl2, CO and CH4. These compounds are gases at ordinary conditions of temperature and pressure. They are cooled and subjected to high pressure where they solidify.
Ionic solid: The ionic solids are formed by molecules containing positively charged, smaller in size cation and negatively charged relatively bigger anions. The crystalline salts are ionic solids. Example include NaCl.
