Continuous sheets or films (natural or synthetic) that contain a network of sub-microscopic holes or pores through which small solvent molecules like water can pass but not the bigger molecules of solute is known as semi-permeable membrane.

Cellulose acetate, potassium ferrocyanide, etc., are used as semi-permeable membranes for carrying out reverse osmosis.
