Question

Give an example of an ion with minimum internuclear distance.

Solution

Internuclear distance

  1. The distance between two nuclei is called internuclear distance.
  2. It varies inversely with the bond order of ions means the more the bond order lesser the internuclear distance.
  3. Example: In O2 the bond order is 2. In O2+ the bond, the order is 2.5, In O2- the bond order is 1.5, whereas in O22- the bond order is 1.
  4. As the bond order of O2+ is highest, its internuclear distance is shortest.

Therefore, the example of an ion with minimum internuclear distance is O2+.
