Question

Give an example of entropy from everyday life.

Open in App
Solution

Entropy:

  • Entropy is the measure of randomness or disorder of the system.
  • It is extensive property which means its value is dependent on the amount of matter present in the system.
  • The entropy of a highly ordered system is very less. As entropy increases the randomness of the system increases.
  • It arises due to molecular motion, or due to change in temperature.
  • It is calculated as,

Ssystem=qreversibleT

  • where, Ssystem=change in entropy of the system, qreversible=the heat of reversible reaction., T= absolute temperature or temperature in K

Example of entropy in everyday life: The boiling of Water is an example of entropy. In this, the temperature of Water increases and is dispersed in the surrounding atmosphere as water vapors which means when water molecules are in the liquid state they have definite volume and surface but when they evolved in the atmosphere they get more surface to disperse and randomness of water molecules increases.
