Point Mutation:

  1. A point mutation is defined as a genetic mutation where a single nucleotide base pair is inserted, deleted, or changed from a sequence of RNA or DNA of the genome of an organism.
  2. Point mutation is a chemical change in only one base pair of a gene.
  3. If there is a point mutation in the gamete or cell that becomes the gamete, it can be passed on to the offspring and subsequent generations.
  4. If the adversity is enough to affect the phenotype of the organism then it is known as a genetic disorder or hereditary disease.

Example:

  1. Sickle cell is an example of a point mutation.
  2. This condition is the result of a mutation occurring on chromosome 11 of the hemoglobin beta gene.
