Question

Give an example of variable velocity when the magnitude is constant and the direction is changing.

Solution

Uniform Circular Motion:

  1. In a uniform circular motion, the particle moves with a constant speed in a circular motion.
  2. Thus, the magnitude of the velocity remains constant.
  3. The direction of the particle is continuously changing.
  4. Thus, the direction of the velocity is the same as the direction of the displacement of the particle at a given instance.
  5. Hence, the velocity of the particle is variable during a uniform circular motion.
  6. The diagrammatic representation of a uniform circular motion is given below:

Hence, the example of variable velocity when the magnitude is constant and the direction is changing is a particle moving in a uniform circular motion.
