Give an example where physisorption changes to chemisorption with rise in temperature. Explain the reason for change?

Solution

Adsorption of hydrogen gas on finely divided nickel surface takes place by physisorption through weak van der Waals forces.

With increase in temperature, hydrogen gas is dissociated into hydrogen atoms which makes chemical bonds with the adsorbent. Thus, chemisorption occurs.
