Question

Give an example where, when a body is released from a height, the potential energy of the body is gradually transformed into kinetic energy?

Open in App
Solution

The potential energy of the body is transformed into kinetic energy:

Example:

  1. We know that a stone on a house's roof has potential energy. When the stone is thrown from the roof, it begins to descend towards the ground.
  2. As the stone continues to fall, its potential energy decreases due to the drop in height. However, when velocity increases, its kinetic energy increases as well.
  3. When the stone reaches the ground, its potential energy is zero as height is zero, and all of the energy is converted to kinetic energy.
  4. As a result, the stone's potential energy is progressively converted into kinetic energy.
  5. Here potential energy + kinetic energy = constant

Conclusion:

  1. We can conclude from the above explanation that when a body is launched from a height, its potential energy is progressively changed into kinetic energy.
  2. Apart from being turned from potential energy to kinetic energy, the energy can be transformed into any kind of energy.
