Question

Give an expression for Snell's Law.

Open in App
Solution

Laws of Refraction

  1. Light rays suffering refraction follow the following laws:
  2. Law 1: The incident ray, the refracted ray, and the normal at the point of incidence all lie in the same plane.
  3. Law 2: The ratio of the sine of the angle of incidence to the sine of the angle of refraction for a pair of media is constant.
  4. Thus if the angle of incidence is i and the angle of refraction is r,
  5. This constant is called the refractive index of the medium.
  6. The refractive index of a medium is denoted by μ (mu).

So, μ=sinisinr

This relationship is called Snell's law.
