The Gupta period saw the revival of Hinduism and the Sanskrit language. The Guptas made Sanskrit the court language and patronized Sanskrit playwrights, poets, philosophers and grammarians. Kalidasa emerged during this period and wrote two of his most definitive works Abhigyanashakuntalam and Meghadoota. He also wrote Kumarasambhava, Raghuvansham, and Rutusamhar. This period also saw the compilation of the Panchatantra, rewriting of the Puranas and the revision and rewriting of the Mahabharata. Shudrakas Mrichhkatikam and many other eminent literary works such as Bhavbhutis Uttar Ramcharit, Vishakadatta's Mudra Rakasha, and Dandis Dashkumarcharita were also written during this time.
