The word Nritya has been derived from the original Sanskrit word Nrit. Dance is known to be a medium which uses taal and laya (rhythm and harmony) to realise beauty. Lord Shiva is said to be the god of dance. Hence, he is also called Natraj. India has a wide variety of dance forms emanating from its regions. These include Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Kathakali, Manipuri, Kathak and Odissi.
