Definition:

  1. Those liquids which do not mix together in all proportions and form separate layers are called immiscible liquids.
  2. A mixture of two immiscible liquids that on intermixing form two distinct layers can be separated by using an apparatus called the separating funnel.

Examples :

Following samples can be separated using the separating funnel.

  • A mixture of groundnut oil and water.
  • A mixture of water and mustard oil.
  • A mixture of petrol and water.
  • A mixture of carbon disulfide and water.
