Give any two characteristics of kingdom fungi.

Fungi:

  1. The kingdom of fungi includes unicellular and multicellular eukaryotes.
  2. Fungi body is composed of thread-like narrow filamentous structures known as hyphae.
  3. The cell wall is composed of chitin.
  4. Fungi are heterotrophic, and thus depend on others for food.
  5. Due to the absence of green photosynthetic pigment 'chlorophyll' they cannot produce their food through photosynthesis.
  6. They can be parasitic or saprophytic.
  7. Fungi can be unicellular, multicellular, or filamentous. Based on this they are classified into three groups:
  • Thread-like fungi - Bread mould
  • Club fungi- Mushroom
  • Sac fungi- Yeast
