Alkanes are saturated hydrocarbons with general formula:

Alkenes are unsaturated hydrocarbons with general formula:
$C_{n} H_{2 n}$ or $C_{n} H_{2 n - 2}$
In these hydrocarbons, the carbon atoms are linked to each other by single covalent bonds.
e.g., $C_{2} H_{6}$ In these hydrocrbons, the valencies of carbon atoms are bot satisfied by single covalent bond.
e.g., $C_{2} H_{4}, C_{2} H_{2}$
