Question

Give any two examples of homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures.

Open in App
Solution

Defining homogeneous mixtures:

Those mixtures in which the substances are uniformly mixed without any clear boundary of separation are called homogeneous mixtures.

Example of homogeneous mixtures

  1. A mixture of sugar or salt in water is a homogeneous mixture. This is because the various constituents are uniformly blended with no separating border.
  2. A miscible liquid mixture, such as Ethanol in water, Acetone, Benzene, etc.
  3. Soda water, soft drinks, alcohol and water mixture, vinegar, kerosene and petrol mixture, seawater, petrol, brass, etc.

Defining heterogeneous mixtures:

Those mixtures in which the substances have uniform composition and also have visible boundaries of separation between the constituents are called heterogeneous mixtures.

Example of heterogeneous mixtures

  1. The sugar and sand mixture has a heterogeneous composition. This is because different areas of the mixture will have different constituent compositions, resulting in an apparent separation barrier between sugar and sand particles.
  2. A mixture of two or more immiscible liquids is also a heterogeneous mixture. A mixture of two immiscible liquids i.e., petrol and water is an example of a heterogeneous mixture.
