Two reasons for using animal dung in a biogas plant are:

1. Animal dung is available in plenty in India, particularly in rural areas.
2. If not used properly, animal dung contributes to the waste. This waste can potentially contaminate water sources (e.g. streams, rivers, and groundwater).

Using biogas over animal dung cakes has a lot of advantages. Two such advantages are listed below:

1. Burning of dung cakes creates a lot of smoke, which causes air pollution. Whereas, biogas burns with a smokeless flame. So, it does not cause air pollution.
2. Burning of dung cakes leaves residual ash, which needs separate disposal. Whereas, biogas leaves no residual ash on burning.
