Chromosomes

1. Chromosomes are thread-like structures present within the nucleus of the cells. They carry the genetic material that is carried from one generation to the next.
2. A total of 23 pairs of chromosomes are found in human beings. 22 pairs are autosomes whereas one pair of the chromosome is the sex chromosome.
3. Sex chromosomes determine the sex of the offspring. X and Y are sex chromosomes. The presence of XX results in a female offspring and XY in a male offspring.
