Question

Give balanced chemical equations for the following conversions

BromoethaneEEthaneFSodiumpropionate

Open in App
Solution

Step 1 : Preparation of Ethane from Bromoethane:

  1. Reduction of Bromoethane in the presence of Zn or Cu catalyst results in the formation of the desired product, that is, Ethane and Hydrogen bromide as a by-product.
  2. The balanced chemical equation is represented as follows:

C2H5Brl+2HAlcoholZn/CuC2H6g+HBrgBromoethaneEthaneHydrogenbromide

Step 2: Conversion of Ethane from Sodium propionate :

  1. When Sodium propionate is heated with Sodium hydroxide in the presence of Calcium oxide, it results in the formation of the desired product, that is, Ethane and Sodium carbonate as a by-product.
  2. The balanced chemical equation is represented as follows:

C2H5COONas+NaOHaqCaOC2H6g+Na2CO3sSodiumSodiumEthaneSodiumpropionatehydroxidecarbonate

Step 3 :The complete balanced chemical equation for each conversion is represented as follows:

C2H5Br(l)+2[H]AlcoholZn/CuC2H6(g)+HBr(g)BromoethaneEthaneHydrogenbromide

C2H5COONa(s)+NaOH(aq)CaOC2H6(g)+Na2CO3(s)SodiumSodiumEthaneSodiumpropionatehydroxidecarbonate

BromoethaneAlcoholZn/CuEthaneCaOSodiumpropionate
