Dehydration of concentrated sulphuric acid with sugar crystals.

Open in App
Solution

  1. Concentrated sulphuric acid can perform a dehydration reaction with sugar. After mixing, the color changes from white to brownish and eventually to black.
  2. The expansion of the mixture is the result of the vaporization of water and carbon (C) inside the container.
  3. As the acid dehydrates the sucrose, the water produced will dilute the sulfuric acid, giving out energy in the form of heat.
  4. Reaction- C12H22O11(s)Sugar+H2SO4(aq)12C+11H2O
