1. When dry ammonia$\left({\mathrm{NH}}_3\right)$ is passed over heated black copper oxide$\left(\mathrm{CuO}\right)$ ammonia is oxidized to nitrogen$\left({\mathrm{N}}_2\right)$ and water.
2. The copper oxide turns from black to reddish-brown as it is reduced to copper$\left(\mathrm{Cu}\right)$
