Solution

  1. Highly active metals like potassium, sodium, calcium, and aluminum have a great affinity towards oxygen and so their oxides cannot be reduced by carbon or carbon monoxide, or hydrogen.
  2. Hence, metals in the middle of the reactivity series can be reduced by hydrogen or carbon monoxide.
  3. Zinc(Zn), copper(Cu), and Iron(Fe) oxides can be reduced by hydrogen or carbon monoxide.
  • ZnO + C → Zn + CO.
  • CuO + H2 → Cu + H2O
  • Fe2O3(s) + 3CO(g)→ 2Fe(s) + 3CO2
