The ear, which is separated into external, middle, and inner ear, is used to perceive sound.
Sound waves flow through the auditory meatus and reach the tympanic membrane, or ear drum, which is located inside the canal a few centimetres away from the ear pinna and amplifies the sound waves before transmitting them into the inner ear.
If a sharp instrument is inserted into the ear canal, it can injure or rupture the eardrum if it is pushed in too far. As a result, hearing loss may occur.
