Give chemical test to distinguish :
(i) Formaldehyde and acetaldehyde
(ii) Dimethyl ether and ethyl alcohol

(i) Formaldehyde and Acetaldehyde
  • With freshly prepared sodium nitroprusside solution and excess of dil. NaOH acetaldehyde produces a deep blue colour.
  • Formaldehyde does not give the above test.
(ii) Dimethyl ether and ethyl alcohol
  • Ethyl alcohol gives Iodoform test is, a pale yellow precipitate of iodoform is formed.
CH3CH2OHethylalcohol+4I2+6NaOHCHI3iodoform+HCOONa+5NaI+5H2O
  • Dimethyl ether does not give iodoform test.
