Solution

(i) Sodium reacts with water vigorously to form the alkali sodium hydroxide.

2Na + 2H2O 2NaOH + H2Sodium Water Sodium hydroxide Hydrogen gas

(ii) Burning red hot magnesium reacts with steam to form magnesium oxide and liberate hydrogen gas.

Mg + H2O MgO + H2Magnesium Water Magnesium Hydrogen gas(Red hot) oxide

(iii) Zinc reacts with dilute sulphuric acid and replaces hydrogen in the acid to form zinc sulphate, liberating hydrogen gas in the process.

Zn + dil. H2SO4 ZnSO4 + H2 Zinc dil. Sulphuric acid Zinc sulphate Hydrogen gas

(iv) When mercuric oxide is strongly heated, it decomposes to mercury metal, liberating oxygen.

2HgO DecomposeHeat 2Hg + O2Mercuric oxide Mercury Oxygen gas

(v) When silver oxide is strongly heated, it decomposes to silver metal, liberating oxygen.

2Ag2O DecomposeHeat 4Ag + O2Silver oxide Silver Oxygen gas

(vi) When copper hydroxide is strongly heated, it decomposes to form cupric oxide and water.

Cu(OH)2 DecomposeHeat CuO + H2OCopper hydroxide Cupric oxide Water

(vii) When calcium hydroxide is strongly heated, it decomposes to form calcium oxide and water.

Ca(OH)2 DecomposeHeat CaO + H2OCalcium hydroxide Calcium oxide Water

(viii) When lead carbonate is strongly heated, it decomposes to form lead oxide and carbon dioxide.

PbCO3 DecomposeHeat PbO + CO2Lead carbonate Lead oxide Carbon dioxide PbO + CO Pb + CO2Lead oxide Carbon dioxide Lead Carbon dioxide

(ix) On heating, potassium nitrate decomposes to form potassium nitrite and oxygen gas.

2KNO3 DecomposeHeat 2KNO2 + O2Potassium nitrate Potassium nitrite Oxygen gas

(x) On heating, copper nitrate decomposes to cupric oxide, nitrogen dioxide and oxygen.

2Cu(NO3)2 DecomposeHeat 2CuO + 4NO2 + O2 Copper nitrate Cupric oxide Nitrogen dioxide Oxygen gas

(xi) On heating, mercuric nitrate decomposes to form mercury, nitrogen dioxide and oxygen.

Hg(NO3)2 DecomposeHeat Hg + 2NO2 + O2 Mercuric nitrate Mercury Nitrogen dioxide Oxygen gas

(xii) On heating, silver nitrate decomposes to form silver, nitrogen dioxide and oxygen.

2AgNO3 DecomposeHeat 2Ag + 2NO2 + O2 Silver nitrate Silver Nitrogen dioxide Oxygen gas
