Give example for non aqueous solvents.

Solution

  • Solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more components. A solution is formed by the combination of solute and solvent.
  • The substance which is present in the same physical state of solution is called solvent.
  • If both the substance are in same physical state, then substance present in greater quantity is considered as solvent.
  • The substance present in lesser quantity is called solute.

For example, Common salt in water.

Solute- Common salt ,Solvent – Water

  • In the above example, water is the solvent. Water can dissolve almost all substance. Therefore water is considered as a universal solvent.
  • But some compounds cannot dissolve in water.
  • Such substances dissolves in organic solvents.
  • The liquid other than water is taken as solvent is called non aqueous solvents.

For example, Alcohol, Petrol, Ether, Benzene etc
