Solid-Liquid Mixtures - When the mixture contains one solid substance and a liquid, then any one of the following methods can be used to separate the constituents:

  1. Filtration
  2. Sedimentation and decantation
  3. Evaporation
  4. Distillation
  5. Centrifugation
  6. Chromatography
  7. Crystallization

Examples of Solid-Liquid Mixtures -

  1. A precipitate of Barium Sulphate (BaSO4) or Silver Chloride (AgCl) can be separated from water by the process of filtration.
  2. Purification of river water for drinking purposes is carried out by filtration through sand beds.
  3. A mixture of sawdust and Water (H2O), Charcoal (C) and Water (H2O), Zinc Dust (Zn), and Water (H2O) can be separated by the process of filtration.
  4. Used tea leaves can be separated from prepared tea by the process of filtration.
  5. A mixture of Chalk (CaCO3) and Water (H2O) can be separated by the process of filtration.
