Question

Give examples of slow reaction

Open in App
Solution

Rate of reaction

  1. Reaction rate or rate of reaction determines the chemical reactivity and speed of the reaction.
  2. Rate of reaction can be defined as change in concentration of product per unit time.
  3. Rates are different for different reactions, in some reaction the reaction takes place instantaneously while for some others it may take an year.

Slow reaction

  • The changes happening over a long period of time are considered as slow reactions.
  • Examples: Rusting of iron, Ripening of fruits.
  • Equation for the Rusting of Iron:

4Fe(s)Iron+3O2(g)OxygenxH2O(moisture)2Fe2O3.xH2OIron(III)oxide(Rust)(s)

Since, Rusting of iron and ripening of fruits takes time for completion. Therefore, they are slow reaction.
