Open in App
Solution

Dear Student
Alimentary canal is the passage along which food passes for digestion. It is also known as the gastrointestinal tract and extends from mouth to anus.

The mechanical and chemical breakdown of food occurs along the alimentary canal along with absorption of nutrients. This process happens along the entire length of the alimentary canal from mouth to anus called as digestive system.

The major organs include: Buccal cavity, oesophagus, stomach, small intestine and large intestine. Along with this there are special glands which secrete digestive juices like salivary gland, liver and pancreas. Each organ has its own juices and enzymes to function and cause the breakdown of food.

Thus, the digestive system is a complex series of organs and glands that processes food.
