Question

Give four examples of heterogeneous catalysis.

Open in App
Solution

Examples of heterogeneous catalysis are as shown.
(1) Ammonia is manufactured from hydrogen and nitrogen in Haber's process. Finely divided iron catalyst is used.
N2(g)+3H2(g)Fe(s)−−2NH3(g)
Catalyst is in solid phase and the reactants are in gas phase.
(2) During manufacturing methanol from CO and hydrogen, a mixture of copper and zinc oxide is used as a catalyst and Cr2O3 is used as promoter.
CO(g)+2H2(g)Cu,ZnO,Cr2O3−−−−−−−−CH3OH(l)
(3) In the contact's process for manufacturing SO3 from SO2, platinised asbestos or V2O5 is used as catalyst.
2SO2(g)+O2(g)PtorV2O5−−−−−2SO3(g)
(4) Nickel catalyst is used for the dehydrogenation of ethanol.
CH3CH2OHNiCH3CHO+H2
